Deep-tech startup Polium Scientific has been awarded First Place in the Food & Agritech category at the prestigious 2025 EIT Jumpstarter Grand Finale, held at the Budapest Congress Center.
Organized by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), an independent body of the European Union, the EIT Jumpstarter program identifies Europe’s most promising scientific discoveries and provides them with the strategic framework necessary to transform into scalable businesses.

A Record-Breaking Competitive Field
The 2025 edition of the EIT Jumpstarter program marked the most competitive cohort in its history, drawing an unprecedented 908 applications from innovators across Europe—representing a 49% increase compared to the previous year.
Following months of intensive business training, advanced mentorship, and rigorous regional selection processes, the field was narrowed down to 42 finalist teams competing live across seven thematic cohorts. Polium Scientific delivered a standout pitch in the highly competitive Food & Agritech category, ultimately claiming the top position and the €10,000 grand prize.

Addressing Food Waste via Advanced Material Science
This European Union-backed recognition validates both the commercial readiness and the significant environmental impact of Polium Scientific’s core technology. With nearly one-third of global food production lost to waste, the company targets critical inefficiencies directly within the agricultural supply chain.
Polium Scientific’s award-winning solution utilizes a patented polymer composite foam designed to extend the shelf life of fresh produce by actively optimizing its immediate environment during transport and storage. The technology integrates seamlessly into existing logistics packaging and features:
- Ethylene Absorption: Capturing the organic gases responsible for accelerated ripening to prevent premature spoilage.
- Moisture Absorption: Efficiently absorbing excess moisture within the packaging to mitigate mold growth and bacterial development.
- Mechanical Protection: Providing a lightweight, cushioning infrastructure that minimizes bruising and physical damage during transit.

Scaling Towards Commercial Impact
This milestone highlights the strong scientific foundation of Polium Scientific, which originated from research collaborations at the Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) and continues to receive strategic support from ecosystem partners like Sabancı Inovent.
Securing first place at the EIT Jumpstarter Grand Finale accelerates Polium Scientific’s momentum as the company transitions its advanced packaging materials from validated pilots to full commercial manufacturing, establishing a more sustainable, waste-free food supply chain across Europe.
